The Thirteenth Annual Read to Me Tea celebrated the artistic accomplishments of 60 West Michigan children with special needs. Children were able to enter the competition by attending area schools that work with CTC. This was the first year that our in-office clients were invited to enter and win, including members of our social language group and individual therapies.

“The artists at the reception are always so impressive,” Jean Silbar, speech pathologist and CTC’s executive director, explained. “They are very professional and it is a treat to celebrate with them.”
The winners munched cookies and drank lemonade while listening to stories read by local celebrities. This year we were honored to welcome our “celebrity” readers, including: Katherine Condon from Representative Justin Amash’s office, Mary Judnich from US Senator Debbie Stabenow’s office, and members of the Story Spinners of Grand Rapids. This event provides parents of special needs children the opportunity to speak with local lawmakers about their child and special education issues. After hearing stories, winners and their families were invited to make origami frogs and move and groove with our Dance/Movement Therapist.
This year’s subject, Fable and Fairy Tales, had over 100 entries. Winning designs were produced as note cards for participants.
“This Tea is made possible because our professionals allow our students with disabilities to shine and share their skills with family, friends and our elected representatives,” said Silbar.
