Former Mayor Heartwell reads at the 2015 Read to Me Tea

We are pleased to announce the Eleventh Annual Read to Me Tea!
The event will take place May 9, 2016, from 3:00 – 4:00pm, at the Women’s City Club. The Tea celebrates the artistic accomplishments of 60 West Michigan schoolchildren with special needs.
March is Social Worker Month; April, Occupational Therapy Month; and May, Better Hearing and Speech Month. In conjunction with these special months Comprehensive Therapy Center holds a coloring contest for the children in sixteen area schools with whom the agency’s social workers, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists work.
“We love to celebrate our students,” Jean Silbar, speech pathologist and CTC’s executive director, said. “Frequently, children with special needs are not recognized for the many skills that they do possess. This event allows us to share their talents.”
The event includes several “celebrity” readers, such as Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalyn Bliss, State Senator Dave Hildenbrand, Representative Amanda Price, and Mary Judwich from US Senator Debbie Stabenow’s office. This provides parents of special needs children with the opportunity to speak with local lawmakers about special education issues.
“Over the past eleven years, CTC has developed wonderful community partners. It is our honor to share the success of the children we work with through our coloring contest and tea for the winners,” Silbar commented.
This year’s subject, My Favorite Animal, had over 200 entries. Winning designs are produced as notecards for participants. Previous winning designs may be seen at here.
