Dance Movement Therapy Defined
Dance/movement Therapy (DMT), is defined by the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA), as the psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive and physical integration of the individual, for the purpose of improving health and well-being.
What does this really mean? Dance/movement therapy is a behavioral health modality that combines physical activity, social support, creativity and emotional expression. It is important to note that much of the work through DMT is conducted through non-verbal communication but that does not mean a dance/movement therapist doesn’t speak during sessions. However, through non-verbal communication, dance/movement therapists can create a safe space for clients where there is little emphasis on speaking.
